Obituary for Woodrow Thomas Sorrell Jr.

On Saturday, May 29, 2021, Woodrow Thomas “Woody” Sorrell, Jr. passed away at the age of 70.

Woody was born in Durham, NC on October 6, 1950 to Woodrow Thomas Sorrell, Sr. and Geraldine Martin Sorrell. He grew up in the Lowes Grove community and worked as an auto mechanic for many years as well as the construction industry as a carpenter. He lived and worked many years in Jupiter, Florida before returning to Durham.

Woody deeply mourned the recent passing of his brother Randy and had many health issues. He loved to fish, and was an excellent southern cook.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Randall Martin “Randy” Sorrell and is survived by two daughters: Melissa Lynn “Lisa” Merritt of Summerfield, NC and Corey Ann Sorrell of Wendell, NC; grandchildren: Lydia Ruth, Trey Ruth, Riley Ruth and Noah Sorrell; as well as siblings: Susan Sorrell “Susie” Whaley (Chuck) of Durham, Charles Robert “Bobby” Sorrell (Tammy) of Rougemont; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will hold a memorial service on 11:00 am Thursday, June 10, 2021 at Lake Elton in Durham near where he grew up. The address is 5408 Lake Elton Rd, Durham.

I grew up with Woody in Lowe’s Grove and went to school with him at Jordan.He was a good friend and we had some fun times!!We always laughed and he was so funny!!!He made me happy.Though we lost touch I never forgot him …how could you forget Woody?What a good friend!!!We will never forget him …ever.Our thoughts and prayers to his family.We love you all!!!Buddy and Stephney Gilbert
